Car headlight bulb types (and what they mean)
Headlight bulb names can look like a random code: H11, 9005, D2S… but there’s logic behind it. Here’s the quick, friendly breakdown.
1) Halogen bulbs
These are the most common in older and many mid-range vehicles. Examples include H11, H7, 9005, 9006. They’re usually affordable and easy to replace.
2) HID / Xenon bulbs
Often found in projector housings. Common types: D1S, D2S, D3S, D4S. They require a ballast and have a distinct “warm-up” when turned on.
3) LED headlights
Some cars have factory LED modules (not replaceable as a simple bulb), while others can accept LED replacement bulbs. Fit doesn’t guarantee good beam pattern – housing design matters.
Low beam vs high beam
Some cars use the same bulb for both (with a shutter in a projector), others use two separate bulbs. Always confirm by position.
How to confirm your type
- Check your owner’s manual
- Look at the bulb marking
- Check the headlight housing label
If you share your car info, I can help identify the exact bulb type for each position.
